I think she was referring to the connection to the outside world that she finally got through the ability to communicate.

Sounds like a homework question to me! Do your own research on the life and times of Helen Keller.

Helen Keller was blind and deaf from birth and just left to run around like an animal until her governess to drastic measures to communicate with her and eventually suceeded. I guess she would think of the light as being able to communicate her thoughts and ideas and wants to others, and to gain some release from the "prison" she was stuck in through her disabilities.

Maybe there were two things she was expected for the light she longed for .. first she didnt want to live in darkness anymore as far as I know Helen Keller was deaf & blind from child hood... and second the light of truth which she got it when Anne Sullivan, her teacher, taught her like how important to be living even hadnot saw or hear anything and how to communicate, how to appreciate, how to accept her weakness and many things. After she realize the truth she can face the world even she lived in darkness and she educated us to be brave and to accept what we are and very grateful as we are.

I agree with Sandie - she longed to come out of the darkness that she lived in - once she was able to communicate with others her life changed. She felt connection with the world.

It was several years ago I read her autobio, but I believe she was using light as a metaphor for knowledge.
