First of all, fast isn't always better. Oftentimes its what you don't play that matters the most.
Learn the basics well. Practice and practice. Some guitarists will never be fast, just like in football. Some players are faster than others.
If you want to play fast, thats fine. But play clean. Nothing worse than a sloppy fast guitarist!

Practice repeating guitar licks with a metronome slowly at first. Than when you get it down perfectly increase the speed. Eventually you will remember the fingering and be able to shred without looking. But remember! Start Slowly and work your way up! You also need a good picking technique. For example. play something at normal speed. Now play the same thing fast. If your picking technique changed than you're picking is flawed. You shouldn't have to change your grip or angle of the pick. To get your picking correct. Pick and open G as fast as you can. Keep that form the entire time you play. You will be able to play more precisely and quicker.

Practice for 2 years.

Or, if you practice for one year, you will be a half fast guitarist.

Remember all those finger excercises you learned from your guitar lessons?

Just keep doing them faster and faster. That's pretty much it. Keep playing as fast as you can without making mistakes and then try a little faster, until you can play that fast without making mistakes.

Than be ready for some sore muscles.
