I was listening to a talk radio station when the presenter said, that later on, he'd be talking (via the telephone) to a former member of The Beach Boys. Imagine my surprise when that 'former member of The Beach Boys' turned out to be David Marks!

To me, David Marks was to The Beach Boys as Pete Best was to The Beatles, i.e., he was a member very briefly, before success eventually came along. The presenter - by the way - had no idea of this!

Am I correct about David Marks?

Yes your assumption is correct. However the end result is that he was a member.
