You could always run disk clean up in windows every now and then to get rid of some old files and free up some space. Also, every like week or so run a spyware program, it'll prevent your computer from slowing down. For a good free spyware program you could use Ad-Aware or Spybot.

Should run thorough "scandisk" before you defrag. Now it's called "checkdisk".
If you right click on the drive you are going to defrag, click on properties, then click the tools tab and click on "check now", Put a check in both "automatically fix" and check for bad sectors". It will schedule a scan the next time Windows starts.

Run Scan Disk...same place as defrag.
Also, click on "my computer" then right click on "local drive c:" and choose "properties." Then select "disk cleanup." Just let it run. Do it when you think about it...maybe once a week or month or just when you feel it needs it.
Hope that helps.

Defrag, spyware, antivirus. Plus, I've noticed it sometimes is helps if your hard drive is less than 1/2 full.

I would suggest spyware scans with multiple scanners at least monthly or more often depending on your surfing habits.
