depends how it's done. in many places, it is serious competition, with extreme physical requirements, choreography, and a lot of sweat/hard work. to me, it's a lot more than standing on the sideline yelling "rah". yes, it's a sport. just mirror a cheerleader for a whole game and see if you're tired. you will be.

cheerleading is not a sport. It is an opiniated athletic event. Just like ice skating. There is no clear way to determine a winner. It is based on which judge like what cheers and stunts better.
They are however athletes. Cheerleaders work very hard, they have to be in shape, flexible, and strong to do some of the things they do.

Since occasionally competition is involved, the yes, it is a sport by definition. But with a common lack of originality, the common answer to this question is a skeptic: no. I believe it is however, as the enjoyment factor (females participating and males observing) is extremely higher than table-tennis or chess, two very boring, and very distinctly defined sports.

Absolutely. Some will say that it is not because there is no contact - but there are several sports where there is not contact.

Cheerleading involves:
gymnastics
dance
coordination
strength
talent
highly competitive
etc.

I think that it is probably more difficult than some other sports. Do not let someone tell you that you are not an athlete because you cheer - he better watch his ***** because I know for a fact you could probably kick his *****!

matters on the cheerleading ... if it is the jumping and screaming that the only prereqs are a loud mouth and doing half the football team then no. If it is the chorigrpahed routeens and hours of practice with the memorization and the gymnasitcis then yes.

of course... in my school it was considered a sport. You jump around, do back flips, i lost so much fat by just warming up every day... i really miss it... i'm now on my college dance team... and we do the same thing... jump around, do turns and cheer...
