I like the name "Gene." There are many names when pronounced can be interpreted as a male or female name. Gail/Gayle, Jamie are two that come to mind. Gene means noble or wellborn. One famous namesake who has changed the world for the better is Gene Roddenberry.
If you like the name stand by it be proud of it and your son will be too.
The popularity of names go in cycles. I wouldn't worry about it being an old fashioned name. Many of those make the rounds every 30-60 years. Who knows, you may be leading a new name trend.

Gene is the male spelling of a name that is also a girl's name - Jean is the girl spelling. So, it sounds like a girls name, even though people know it can also be a boy's name.
This would be okay if Gene was still a popular boy's name, but it is out of fashion. People haven't named boys Gene for decades! So, it is definitely an old name, one you would only find with an old man.
Gene Kelly was an excellent and very famous dancer in the 40's and 50's, that is probably the best thing people would think of with this name. Also, there's Gene Roddenberry, who invented the TV show Star Trek originally! Actor Gene Hackman, who most people have heard of, is about sixty years old I think.
I like the name, but I think he would be teased a lot at school.

In my opinion Gene is a nice name but it just seems so old. When I think of Gene I think of my uncle and that's not so good. I would pick a really unique name.I know that whatever name you give your child he's going to find another person with that name but i would just go out of the box. And just because he lives in America doesn't mean he has to have an American name. I'm American but i have an Arabic name.

1. No it does not sound girlish, but if you think so you could try Eugene.
2. I think of a suit and tie for some reason. It is nothing bad.
3. No suggestions as to this one - but good luck. Hope all works out well and that you either have a name that you are happy with or you find one.

I guess it OK name. But, I like Asian names too. Heck, America is made up of many people from all over the World. Even our words are derivatives of other languages. Go to a store like Wal-Wort or better a Book Store that can help you more, like Books-a-Million and find a small book of Boy Names and enjoy reading the Different Origins of the names and what they mean.

I like the name, but because it is from an older generation and sounds like Jean, he will get teased at school, unless he will go to the same school throughout his school years, then the kids will have grown up with him; they'll be so used to it that they won't care. A good thing is that because of the spelling a teacher would realize it was a boy she was looking for when reading the list the first day of each school year.

1. Gene is coed, it's both boyish and girlish. Personally, I think of a woman.
2. I imagine a woman.
3. Yes. Decide on a traditional Asian name; but one that signifys something for YOU! A name says a thousand words. Chose something that says a thousand words for you and your heritage.

I think Gene is a nice name. It is good that you want to give him an american name but to still embrace his asian heritage. It isn't girlish, it's a name that is used for both boys and girls, you have the male spelling.

It seems like you are both putting a lot of thought into your decision which you should so that is good. My honest first impression would be that it sounds a little "country" I live in Missouri and I know three men in my family have that name. Just my opinion. good luck.
