OK, I admit that I wasn't thinking very clearly and this was horribly stupid but I fell for a magazine subscription scam today. These two guys came by my dorm room and asked if I'd help them out. I let them come into my room and we talked for a few minutes before they pitched the scam. I now know it was a scam because it fits the descriptions of many scams that I read about afterwards. I signed the receipt and put my name, number and address on there as well. I didn't have any cash on me so I went to an ATM machine. Luckily for me, I didn't have anything in my account. The guy that had come with me looked really pissed when I told him I and he walked away, 'apologizing' for bothering me. I didn't give them a check or credit card number or anything like that. Just my name, address and phone number. My question is could I still get scammed by them just having that information? I'm really worried and still can't believe how stupid I was for falling for that.

No, you shouldn't get scammed. At worst, they might call you and try to talk you into following through. I'd just screen your calls for a few days; I can't imagine they're going to take too much time to bother you if you show them you're no longer interested.

If they show up in person again, just pretend you're not home. If for some reason they show up and make a nuisance of themselves, notify campus security or call the cops.

I would really try and find out who they were and call the police for advice. They could be scamming other people. They should not be able to get any credit card info, from that info. alone. As long as you did not give a social security number, you should be okay. Just make sure to contact the authorities, who knows they could be rapist or something. Don't ever let strange people into your room again! Its just to risky these days, especially in college dorms. LOL

I would call the number on your card now and get it hot listed. It could of been comprised if they saw it. Especially if your ATM card has a Visa or MasterCard on it. Most door to door magazine sellers are a scam. Most magazine have website you can order subscription without a credit or debit card.

I think he just took the cash and ran. Since he doesn't have a credit card or debt card number or your bank info from a check, you probably won't have problems. In the future, remember to NEVER buy ANYTHING from someone telemarketing on the phone or selling door to door. If you make that an unbreakable personal policy, you will avoid all sorts of bad financial decisions.
