Offer him a mint or gum. Even if he has already declined when offered before. If he doesn't take the hint, offer him some breath spray, with a smile of course. And if that doesn't get his attention, then just gently tell him to ease up on the garlic at lunch.

There are some sites that send people with bad breath an e-mail for that extent, and they don't disclose the name of the person who pointed that to them.

offer him some gum or mints. if that doesn't work just tell him. if my husband tries to kiss me with some nasty breath i tell him to go take care of it before coming near me.

I would rather have a woman tell me than to gross her out and prob lose her company. Just say "you could use a ti-tac." or "what have you been eating"? Honesty is always the best answer. be suttle.
