Yes it is illegal. The same thing as everyone who was taken to court by the RIAA for downloading music. Not all of those people were selling copies or even burning them.

Yes. Here is why. You didn't pay royalities of any kind. Anytime a movie is shown in a theatre the company gets royalities. If it is on HBO or CBS royalities still apply. If it is software, game, music, whatever it is the same and the royalities rule applies. There are a few home movies or little known bands that the owners have put their items there to get the name out or for whatever reason.

Yes its completely illegal to download anything that is copywritten like movies or music and not pay for it. It doesn't matter if you have no intent to distribute it. Its 100% illegal.
