Have you tried using a plunger,sometimes that pushes the clog on down the drain,you could give it a try.

Clorox won't hurt but it doesn't help either. Smack your brother for not using the strainer, and get one that clips or screws in after you declog the tub.

There are many ways to unclog a tub, I figure you have a plunger so here goes;
First, you will need:
a few rags, a plunger, a big straight screwdriver and/or a big phillips screwdriver, maybe regular size screwdrivers too. You might need a pair of channel lock pliers.

Here's what you do;
1. remove the strainer, if it's there.
2. remove any obstructions you can get your fingers on, I know it's gross but do it anyway, wear gloves if you have to.
3. remove the overflow/stopper lever plate, that is the silver plate in the tub wall below the spout it usually has 2 screws. The stopper is attached to the plate, there is a gasket behind the tub be carefull not to lose it and carefully pull the whole the assembly out and set on a rag out of the tub.
4. run the hot only for about a minute after it gets fully hot.
5. if ithere is 2 inches or more of water in the tub then, wet a rag and stuff the pipe behind the overflow, leave some sticking out so you can easily remove it. proceed to 6. if there is not 2 inches of water then turn the water to warm and wet a rag and stuff the pipe behind the overflow, leave some sticking out so you can easily remove it. proceed to 6.
6. put the plunger over the drain and plunge like a madman about 5 times on the last stroke up pull the plunger completely off the drain whole to pull out as much gunk as possible. repeat step 6 adding water as necessary until 2 inches of water drains efficiently, you should get a vortex, the tornado looking thing in the water as it drains.
7. put everything back together, make sure the gasket is set properly behind the overflow, the thick side goes down, if it has one.
good luck and feel free to email me if you get stuck. iggy5267@yahoo.com

The clog is not so much in the drain but rather hair wrapped around the drain plug. On the tub where the flipper switch is to open and close the drain, there is a hole in the bottom of that thing. That's an overflow drain and is connected to the main drain. When you plunge your a$$ off and nothing happens it's because you're pushing air down the drain but it's coming back out through that hole. You need to plug that hole.

Get your brother, plunger, and wet wash cloth. Roll the wash cloth up lengthwise and have your brother hold it over the drain. Now get the plunger and plunge like hell. It'll take a while but you'll get the clog.

There is hair in the drainline and any chemical strong enough to clear a clog could not be sold to you legally.I'm a plumber and there is no good way except by running a snake into the drain- most of the time this works. Don't use drano or such as that because they don't work and the sulphuric acid contained in liquid plumber and the like is not strong enough to knock out the clog,but is stong enought to cause problems in your piping system- it can heat up in plastic piping causing the glue joints to come apart and warping the piping. In metal pipe it can eat a hole through it.
You can remove the strainer at the shoe (where the water goes out ) and fish a piece of wire in there to see if it is clogged with hair at this point.
Another word of advice- products such as drano ( the crystal granule type not the liquid ) react with hot water and turn literally into rock that even a snake can't penetrate. I've had to replace pipes due to people using drano.

It sounds like you have a problem that perhaps you cannot solve..IF you had a plunger, that would be the ONLY way I would go.. I have used them the past and with good results.. putting water in the tub and then when the water in the tub is about 1/4" deep, use the plunger and plunge, plunge and plunge.. I will bet that you would find all sorts of stuff come up.. Yes.. hair will play havoc in clogging a drain... Then after the plunging(YOU MUST USE A PLUNGER) get some of that good Mr. Plumber stuff to pour down the drain. ... and follow instructions on the bottle

Hey sweets, is that Amanda Plummer or Christopher Plummer? It's PLUMBER.

Good God, how do these people walk and chew gum at the same time?

Now here's the right answer: With a new soft rubber plunger, plunge vigorously over the drain. There should be about 2" of water in the tub and a wet rag should be covering the overflow of the tub or the plunger will be useless.

And Sam don't cut school to do this, you need all the education you can get. Your grammar, sentence structure, and spelling leave much to be desired.

Get a product called "Drain Care." It is sold at hardware stores. It is made of powdered enzymes. You mix some in a glass of warm water, like instant coffee, then pour it down the drain. The warm water activates the enzymes, which feed on organic matter, like hair.

The problem with products like Drano, is that they work by blowing through the weakest point of the clog. This leaves most of the blockage intact, making the drain run slowly and easy to get clogged, again. It's also rough on the plumbing.

With repeated use, Drain Care will clear the drain pipes out to their original diameter. It will not harm pipes and is actually good for septic systems. It does not work through heat and pressure, like chemical cleaners. It is also non-toxic. I saw a sales guy eat some at a trade show.

Maintence guy here......

You need to take the cap off, and remove all the hair.

Then, one person talked about a zip it. It is a thin, sharp, plastic tool available at the hardware store. It is about 1-2 foot long. It works!!

Drano, or liguid plumber will do the trick. If it is real thick....then buy at least 2-3 bottles. DON'T BE CHEAP!! It will work!!

IF YOU HAVE STANDING WATER----then you could put a plunger on top of the drain, and pump it a few times. IT WILL HELP LOOSEN SOME OF THE HAIR. Then pour drano.

I maintained a 152 unit apartment for over 3 years. I had quite a few service calls for clogged bath tubs and/or slow draining ones. I only used a chemical very similar to "Drano" (it is only available by order from an industrial supplier), but believe me, try the "Drano" that says specifically for hair and others, it works if applied properly. Come to think about it, what could cause the tub drain to clog, you're right, only hair. Besides, Drano is not expensive, go for it.

My daughter has long hair to her waist and her shower gets clogged up about every few months. Initially, I had to bite the bullet and hire a plumber to snake it the first time ($95). (He said it was the biggest hair ball he had ever fished out of a drain!) But now I stay on top of it. Try not to put too many chemicals down there because they are extremely caustic and could back up onto your feet ot "whatever." They have this "thing" at the hardware store that blasts the clog down with a kind of pump action/vacuum deal. Look into that. A snake is more difficult to use than you think!
