I never have lived in apartments, but it's nice to open the lines of communication. If you are friendly with each other, it's much more likely that any differences (be it music, loud friends, etc) can be worked out amicably instead of involving the polcie.
Besides they can look out for you, if they spot something suspicious happening while you're gone.

No, I expected them to do it since I was the newcomer. No one came up and introduced themselves when I moved in, but when I ran into neighbors in the hall, they did. At my second apt. complex, no one gave me more than a "hello," but it was a larger, less friendly city. The apartments also had exterior corridors, wheras in the first complex, there were four of us in a building that shared a main entrance. Guess it depends on location and what not. I once had a newcomer to the building intro herself before I got a chance to, but I don't feel comfy doing that. I feel it's the tenants' duty to welcome the newcomer.

I have... Maybe it's just my nosiness, maybe my wife is just a desperate housewife in need of friends, maybe I'm just friendly.
The one time in particular, we were in a huge apartment complex- you know the type- one set of stairs with 2 front doors on the ground floor, and 2 front doors upstairs... Anyway, we were upstairs on the right. Up to the left was a single mom with 2 teen-aged sons and a dog- she was nice. One time I got my wife 2 dozen roses, and we didn't have a vase big enough, so we gave her a half dozen...
Then downstairs from us was a newly-wed couple- they were great! We had them over for dinner a couple times, and vice versa....
I've never regretted meeting my neighbors.

Nope. We did end up talking to some neighbors about 6 months after we moved in. But they moved out and we haven't met any other neighbors. I'm not all that interested in meeting them.

It is always good to introduce your self to your next door neighbours. That way, one knows with what people they are going to be with and man being a social animal, needs company, in good as well as bad times.

No, a thousand times no..... it's best if these people remain strangers - someone you can pass in the hall, smile, nod to, but not have to interact with everytime you want to step out to get a paper.....make lots of friends in your life - even with people in the building....but let your next door neighbors be anonymous.

My one set of neighbors introduced themselves as we were moving in and others didn't. I think it depends on your comfort level and the area in which you live. It's nice to have someone watching your back (property), but you could also have someone who is nosy. It's goes both ways.

No I never do, I see them from time to time and wave or say hello but I do not want them coming in to my place or minding my business. One neighbour constantly "borrows" things and that is one of the reasons I like to live away from other people.

yes you should introduce yourself because you never know when you need your neighbors and if they know you maybe they can help you in case of an emergency

yes
1. to see how freaky they are so you know to stay away from them etc...
2. so that you can figure out which ones aren't freaky incase you ever need to call on a neighbor to do something for you... or you can share wireless internet on a network or have them loan you some sugar etc...
3. it's the polite thing to do.
