This is complicated so this answer is very long but I PROMISE I'LL GIVE YOU SOME GOOD ARGUMENTS!
affirmative action (aka positive discrimination) is about discriminating to reverse a past discrimination.
example: In Australia, Aboriginal people are way more likely to spend time in jail than non-Aboriginals, they're less healthy and die at a younger age, they're less likely to get a good education or a job. In other words, Aboriginal people have been statistically proven to have a tougher time than white people.
lets start with education:
- assume that Aboriginal people are 2% of the population, but only 0.5% get into university. This reflects a discrimination that has ALREADY HAPPENED - that statistically, Aboriginals dont get good educations (for heaps of complicated reasons)
- To correct that discrimination, the government makes laws which says "Universities must do their best to ensure at least 2% of students are Aboriginal"
- To do this, Universities accept applications from Aboriginal people even if their entry scores weren't good enough to get into the course until the Aboriginal enrolment is 2% (this is obviously discrimination).
- But what you're left with is equality, not discrimination... the discrimination in affirmative action has corrected the previous discrimination because now the Aboriginal population at university = Aboriginal population generally.
Aboriginal people are an example, but the same thing happens all over the world... probably African-Americans and Hispanics face similar problems in the USA.
So, here's your argument: affirmative action actually creates equality. It uses discrimination to boost a group of people who were previously, because of discrimination, at a lower level than everybody else.
And here's the next argument: by using affirmative action in education, Aboriginal people will then get better educations which will solve the problem with low employment rates because better education = better job. A better job = more money = better health = longer lifespan. People with better jobs also spend less time in jail. That is, one piece of affirmative action can solve many problems.
And after a while, if it works (if people give it a chance to work), we wont need the affirmative action anymore, because the position of the two groups will be more equal.
I know its confusing. Message me if you need more help. (I dont care if you dont agree with the idea)
Good luck with your essay buddy.

Affirmative action is a racist declaration of war against the white male. It purposely excludes him only, and gives away jobs to people of other ethnicities, or homosexuals, or those with disabilities. These people may or may not be more competent than the white males who were turned away because "the workplace needed more diversity".
Now, don't get me wrong, I am NOT a white supremacist and do not hate other races. However, I DO have a problem against hiring somebody exclusively because they are a certain color. Someone shouldn't be hired solely on the basis that they are a black lesbian woman in a wheelchair.
That's my two cents.

I'm sorry...Most people, including blacks (not politically correct, but what many prefer) agree that affirmative action does NOT work.
If you prefer one race over the other, the one that is preferred, doesn't try as hard, doesn't achieve as much.
The way to go is by merit, not race.
