My story is set in England during the year 1799. The problem I'm having is that I need a reason why a group of men would want to beat the hero of my story (a writer) up!! My writer is an atheist (in that village, it's a place rather strict in orthadox) and he's rather bad-mouthed and (when provoked) violent---but of course, the heroine of this story is the girl who changes him--------so why would a group of men want to beat him up??? I doubt that it would be rational for a group of men in christian community beating him up because he's an atheist (this just doesn't make sense) and I don't want to easy way out of this problem by making it "Some guy who loves the heroine is jealous that she loves another, and so beats that other guy up." Might there be any other reason why a group of men would want to beat up a writer??

Maybe he's such a good writer because he used to write propoganda pieces for the French or something, so it's a bunch of Brit loyalists.

On the contrary, it might be a logical response for this 'hero' of yours to get beat up by some 'Christian' gentlemen. If he is an atheist then that in itself might have been a reason to provoke his beating. Remember this is the period of revolutionary fervor on the continent in Europe, especially in France and atheism might have been associated with that revolutionary period. So your writer is only making things worse for himself by being belligerent and is in need of change.

That sounds like a pretty cool story! I say you make it so that the group of men think the guy is not only atheist, but blasphemous. They can't get the main court or whatever to charge him with this, so they go and try to beat him up.

they found out that he was bisexual which upset the christians as he was bonking a couple of them on the quiet, they fell into a mad rage and incited the rest of the men in the village (which i might add they didn't know were bonking the woman on the side)so it suited everyone to do what christians do best and thats to kill him and then burn the woman at the stake. and they all lived happily ever after,

If he's violent when provoked, have him get into with someone after drinking too much. He throws a punch, the others then pounce on him.

I've heard that in England at that time, you'd get beaten for not attending church on every Sunday.
