Thanks to all who have answered so far, and to those who think they know me, Try walking a mile in my shoes. I am not my kids mouthpiece. He has attention/frustration/and distraction issues. I think having a recess would actually help him get his work done when he gets back. Like one of the posters said. You get coffee breaks at work. I am all for reaping what you sow. I would actually prefer a before school dt or an after school dt than taking away the recess.

you need to read over your parent handbook...and see what their discipline plan is ...most schools do now use the take away recess as a result to any behavior they feel in not good....you can call your school and request that they use some other kind of discipline plan with your child that you feel he needs to have the exercise from recess.

It is not a legal right like lunch, last time I checked. It is a privelage that can be granted or taken. Although it is a good thing to give a child recess, sometimes it is a reasonable bargaining chip that a child understands. Giving a child recess is a positive reinforcment for having their work done and behaving well. If that is not done on a continuous basis or to a lare degree, then taking it away is the best way to show that there are both rewards and consequences to actions, even in elementary school.

Recess is not legally protected. 40 years ago it was the same way. You cut up, you don't get your work done, you have to miss recess.
Recess was created to give children a chance to burn off excess energy between classes, thus giving them more concentration in class. It's also one of the carrots to get children to behave. If your child is missing recess, you can be sure there's a legitimate reason. I wouldn't interfere in the lesson.
On the other hand, I wouldn't place a child of mine in a school that has eliminated recess. Far too many children are on drugs intended to calm them because they can no longer go burn off energy at recess.

well since teachers can't hit kids or punish them in any other way to let them know that they have to do thier work they have to get creative and take away something that they kids love love. Similarly how parents deny kids ther freedom by grounding them. they take away recess at the end of the day kids have to know that there are consequences to every action and the child will learn from it in the end its in the child best interest i can bet you that the child will do their work next time in order not to miss recess frankly its no illegal its just frowned upon but i think you should calm down and analzye the situation from all angles before you carry out a reaction.( shoot oof your mouth)

Sorry lady, about your kid, but teachers have the right to take recess away. I believe it's in their contract, actually. Just tell him that he needs to stay focused and if he does a good job in school you'll take him out to do something fun. That's usually what my parents do.

Teachers stand in loco parentis, which means they stand in the place of parents. It is both legal and reasonable to withhold recess as a disciplinary tool

I do not think there are any laws that say a child is entitled to recess.
