I definitely see your point, as this is really just racial segregation, but in all honesty I think it's a wonderful thing. I attended a school with a sports team called the Redmen my entire life. Our only problem was what to call the girls - Lady Redmen? Sort of contradicting, ya know? I have some Native American ancestry, but not enough to really claim anything other than the great ideas laced through the culture. This is, however, one of my favorite parts of my background. The culture is a wonderful one - so respectful and self-sufficient. I think this is why teams get named after the different tribes and such. No one wants to play for a team named after flowers or small rodents, say "the Pansies" or "the Bunnies" and, therefore, they choose strong and powerful representations for the mascots. I think it's a wonderful show of respect for a culture that still all too often get little or none, and certainly not enough.
P.S. - Slider, seriously ridiculous analogy...

I think that it is supposed to be a term of endearment. I live in Iowa and they had to change the name of several school teams because they had Indian Names, But if this keeps up, Our State will need a new name, Illinois will need a new name and even the dakotas. You should look at it as an honor no direspect meant, I am half indian too!!!. They are now trying to get rid of Religious names in sports too like the Angels, but no one has questioned the devils. Now that is something to discuss. I sthis an evil nation???

Calm down now and get over it. I'm Norwegian/Irish and people are calling themselves the Vikings or the Fighting Irish and I certainly have no say about it. And the 'chieftains" could easily be any other civilization and not just Indians. Use your energy to go after something that will make a bloody difference!

America has not yet gotten over its slavery period, and that would not be looked on the same way. Native Americans were taken over by the early settlers, and it feels more natural to the country. I agree with you. It is a thin line to walk on. What people see in their mascots (UIUC's Chief) is derogatory to some people, while others feel it is a privilege to embody someone like that. Both sides will have different stories. It is hard to say.

Ever hear of the Fighting Irish, Steelers, Celtics, Raiders, Packers, Vikings, Buccaneers, Seahawks, Oilers, Texans, Rangers, Quakers, Nets, Knicks, Cavaliers?
These are just a few examples of "white" names of teams.
I doubt any of these groups are offended that they are perceived as "tough" enough to have a sports team named for them. Do you?

Im Irish but I take no offense to the "Fighting Irish" of Notre Dame. And how stereotypical is that name? They might as well call them the Irish Lushes. And I'm proud if it. I'm from Cleveland so we get flak for the Indians. But the way I see it, its a sign of respect for indians. One day a team owner 100 years ago asked himself "I need a name for my team that stands for something strong and represents integrity. I know, The Indians!" I don't see why so many people get all bent out of shape about it.

First of all, NO ONE does that any more. NO ONE! Second, they chose Native American names - Indian because they were fierce and tough and akin to warriors. It shouldn't be some kind of insult.
Everyone is so damned sensitive. I wouldn't be pissed if some college decided to call themselves the 'mouthy bottle blonds with big butts'. I'd be like 'heck yes! we're fierce!'

I'm not saying I agree one way or the other...
but what I find funny is how all the non-natives tell the natives that they shouldn't be offended by the names, it is a honor.
It's like me saying that you should be honored if another guy sleep with your wife. That means she is desireable. I don't know of a single man that would be honored by his wife's infidelity. No matter how many people tell him he should be honored, he will never feel that way.
