The value of any antique coin depends on it's rarity and what kind of shape it is in.. If it's worn and barely legible, it's worth next to nothing, if it's shiney, looks like it's barely been used, it's worth more.. as long as it's rare AND you can find somebody who will buy it.
And, of course, if you take it to a dealer, they're going to want to give you as little as they can for it, but, will sell it to YOU for much higher, because they run the market.

It does depend on the condition and rarity. Check the coin's value at the library or book store. There is a book published on the value of US coins every year.
FYI...I have an 1859 penny that is worth about $2.
