Bad things about an allowance:
1. If given in too large amounts, the child doesn't learn to respect money.
2. If given without earning it, as in for chores, the child won't learn a good work ethic.
3. If given regularly, no matter what the child does, the child will think that people owe him something in life.
4. Depending on the age of the child, if the child is too young to understand the value of a dollar, or how to prioritize, the child may take $5.00 a week, or more, and run out to buy $5.00 worth of candy, instead of saving it for that $50.00 pair of gym shoes he wanted.

The biggest problem with giving an allowance with no expectations is that the children become dependent on a lifestyle that will take years of hard work to achieve once they leave home.
I have met so many parents who spoil their children. What this causes is the children never learn good money skills growing up so that they tend to live outside of their means and are way over their heads in debt. Just look at the savings rate in the United States lately.
I believe that you should only give a child an allowance when the child is not earning any income. It also should be based on chores done around the house. I would also suggest that children learn from their parents that sometimes hard choices need to be made.
My parents taught me that when we did traveling out West and I could not be in band because of the costs associated with it. Looking back, I see that my parents put their extra money into the best education for us children instead of giving us a lot of things.

Will, I suppose there's nothing wrong with your parents giving you a little allowance as long as you appreciate it. But it may be a bad thing if you start thinking like they owe it to to you or you continue to want more and more for doing less and less or worse, nothing at all for it. If this is the way it is, than I feel sorry for you because you're parents are setting you up for failure later in life simply because, this is not how things are in the real world.

Okay, a little allowance CAN be good: It gives the kid some money to shop with, or to save.
But the bad thing is that the kid might decide he is entitled to it no matter how he behaves. I know a few that became huge brats because they knew they would be given things no matter what.

How about that it teaches kids to constantly think about money... like instead of parents providing certain things for their children (like clothes, or school supplies) they claim that their child "Gets allowance, so they should be able to pay for it themselves."
This can get a kid to not make wise decisions about money spending and saving, and have money always at the top of their heads.
That's just my opinion, anyways.

allowance? as in like your parents paying you for stuff? haha well if thats it, you can just say stuff like, children wont understand the true value of a dollar, since in most cases they arent exactly doing much to get the money....
you need to explain your question better though?

It gives the child an expectation of receiving money for doing nothing at all.

Allowance may set bad spending habits, especially if excessive.
