i forgot how to solve for y. i remember x. can you help me solve a couple of these problems:
1.) x - 2y= 4
2.) 3x+6y=24
3.)5+2(x+y)=11
thanks

You solve for y in exactly the same way you solve for x: you move the variable you want to solve to one side of the equation by itself.

So, for #1:
x - 2y = 4
x = 2y + 4 (this is the equation when solving for x)
2y = x - 4
y = (x - 4) / 2
or y = x/2 - 2 (this is the same equation solved for y)

Solving for y is exactly the same as solving for x except it's a different variable.
1.) x - 2y= 4
solve for x:
x - 2y = 4
x = 4 + 2y or x = 2y + 4 (add 2y to both sides)

solve for y:
-2y = 4 - x divide both sides by -2
y = (x - 4)/2

2.) 3x+6y=24
solve for x:
3x = 24 - 6y divide each side by 3
x = 8 -2y

solve for y:
6y = 24 - 3x divide each side by 6
y = 4 - 1/2 x

3.)5+2(x+y)=11
solve for x:
5+2(x+y)=11 subtract 5 from each side
2(x + y) = 6 divide by 2
x + y = 3 subtract y
x = 3 - y

solve for y:
same way, except when you get to x + y = 3, you subtract x:
y = 3 - x

1) x-2y=4
subtract x from both sides
-2y=x+4
and divide by -2
y= -1/2 x-2
2)3x+6y=24 subtract 3x
6y= -3x +24 divide by 6
y= -1/2 x + 4
3)5+2(x+y)=11 subtract 5
2(x+y)= 6 divide by 2
x+y = 3 subtract x
y= - x +3

basically get each equation to read 'y = so

1) x - 2y = 4 -> y = 4 - x / 2

2) 3x + 6y = 24 -> y = 24 - 3x / 6

3) 5 +2(x + y) = 11 -> 5+ 2x + 2y = 11 -> y = 6 - 2x / 2

Hope this helps

1.)
x - 2y = 4
-2y = -x + 4
y = (1/2)x - 2

----------------------

2.)
3x + 6y = 24
6y = -3x + 24
y = (-1/2)x + 4

---------------------------

3.)
5 + 2(x + y) = 11
2(x + y) = 6
x + y = 3
y = -x + 3

1)subtract x to both side and divide by -2. u get y=-1/2x+2.
2)subtract 3x to both side and divide by 6. u get y = -1/2x+8
3)subtact the 5 to both side and divide by 2, and subtract x.u get y=-x+3.
