whats the difference?

a tap and die set will do both jobs,it will cut and make threads,,as well as repair old threads,,where as a re-thread kit will only repair old threads,,it wont re-cut new ones,,this don't sound like much of a difference,,but it is,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.

Yeah, he's dead right. Rethread sets are also called thread chasers out in our neck of the woods.
