Check with your local department of human services. See if they have any programs going right now.
They usually have lists of different charities that may help you.
While you are talking to the DHS, see if they have any other program that you might qualify for other than just energy assistance.

Call or go to your local Food Stamp/Welfare office and ask. In my state you can automatically have an application for energy assistance entered along with a Food Stamp application. If you do not qualify for Food Stamps that agency can give you the information you need to apply in other ways. Usually agencies that deal with the elderly will also have the application information for you since many of their clients qualify for energy assistance based on medical need as well as income. The nearest Social Security office should also be able to help you. Most energy assistance for heating in the winter also has a corresponding cooling assistance for the summer to help people with a medical need for air conditioning (heart problems, breathing problems, etc.) and offices that help those people are usually aware of how you will go about applying.

Most utilities have programs - like Detroit Edison has a program called "THAW", which can help you out. Your best bet is to use your own utility company.
