im not sure what intermediate is but they range from like 13-17inches, you should just get one in a size that your son feels comfortable with. right now i play a 15 1/2 and im in high school, but it should be small enough that he can cup the scroll with his hand while in playing position. if you need more specifics u can email me.

hope this helps

wait, I forgot to add that if your son is in elementary school, and a 13 inch is too big for him, you may want to get a violin strung as a viola, thats what I did when I first started in 4th grade.

i never heard of that.....but it depends on your sons size first off....so you should get that checked when you go to a strings shop/store....they should be able to measure him
