Hmmm....

Ok, assuming the custodian rides on the elevator at the same time as the books ( a safe assumption)...

The elevator's capacity is reduced by 160 (the weight of the custodian), so the elevator can only hold (900 - 160) = 740lbs

Each box is 37 lbs, so 740 / 37 lbs. = 20 boxes

first subtrat th weight of the custodian
900-160=740
then divide the rest of the weight by the wieght of each box
740/ 37 = 20
the custodian can take up to 20 boxes a trip

with the custodian accompanying the boxes of books in the elevator, the answer is 20 boxes of books.
another possibility is: the custodian can load the elevator with 24 and almost a half box of books, push the button to floor 6, the custodian can take the stair and meet his load on the 6th floor.

(900-160)/37= x

(740)/37=x

20=x

20 boxes of books plus the custodian can fit on the elevator bringing it to its maximum weight but not exceding it.

37x + 160 < (or equal to) 900

37 represents the weight of the books. X represents how many boxes you have.
160 is the weight of the custodian, which we know is constant.
900 is the weight limit, which we can reach but not exceed.

The answer is 20. 900-160 = 740. 740/37 = 20

that's easy, 20!

900-160=740

740 divided by 37 equals 20... so 20 boxes at one time would match the weight max. of the elevator

900#-160# = 740#

740# is what you can still take on, in other words 740/37 = 20 boxes maximum
