It's because her brother died in a motorcycle accident and in memory to him she wears that key. I believe she still does to this day, maybe not always around the neck though but on her person.

You'll probably want to buy a cool key-chain / lanyard and hook your keys to them. I do this and I go to a university. Or, if that's not an option, you can make room for it in your makeup bag and stick them in there. As trashy/bad as you perceive PDK (public display of keys), the last thing you'll want is to head to your car without them. :)
