Because some people, who do not forget, continue on to remind those that do. I'm certain it's the only reason we haven't totally annihilated the human race yet.
Learn your history. Even if you don't use your knowledge, you might use it for someone else's benefit in the future.

The point of history class is to point out what has been tried, what our ancestors thought, and how different groups act. Remember that history is also written by the winners and often over looks the loser's point of view. In the past 50 years there has been a movement to rewrite the history of the US in the eyes of a certain group.
Remember that they who do not know history and learn from it are bound to repeat it.

To learn about things that happened in the past and so you don't repeat the same mistakes committed by others and to learn where you and your culture came from for starters. Aren't you just a little curious to know how things evolved from the caveman times to the modern era?

To learn about the past. It's an extraordinary thing to learn about things that have happened in the past and try to figure out how those acts and occurrences have effected where we are today. Also, you can learn from the past and I think it is vital to know where you came from, how your country came to be, the travesties that have happened in the past, and most of all, the tribute it pays to the past when we pay think about it and discuss it.

we learn history so that we learn from our mistakes and our achievements. By learning history, we make sure that we don't repeat our mistakes again, and copy or emulate the achievement we garnered before

Hopefully if you understand history, you will not repeat the same mistakes. Unfortunately, Americans do not learn enough about world history, and make mistake after mistake in the world forum.
