"Someone Like You" by Van Morrison
"Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison
"Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce
If you want something more recent, how about Lifehouse, "You and Me"? Or "Bright Lights" by Matchbox Twenty?

I know James Taylor doesn't sound like Rod Stewart but how about "Maggie May"? It's fairly has fairly easy lyrics. Good luck!

I agree with all of the above, but if you're trying to make it as a songwriter, take a hint from the movie "Coyote Ugly" and sing an original song that you wrote (lyrics and music). You may be able to make it in the music business as a singer, or be proud that another singer is performing your material.
