there are WAY too many good rock bands.
i contend that the Beatles are the best band in existence, followed closely by the Velvet Underground, and that most modern rock sucks.
in the vein of white stripes, i would try The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rooney, the Hives, The Vines, and basically and band that starts with 'the',because that is the moniker among hip trendy modern rock bands.
and with punk you have to go with the classics: sex pistols, ramones, etc.

im not sure exactly what you're looking for...but im into alternative-punk type music, and some of my favorite bands are something corporate, the matches, the used, jack's mannequin, acceptance, cartel, circa survive, AFI, a thorn for every heart....
hope you find some bands youre into.
