One day u finally knew
what you had to do, ang began
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice-
though the ehole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But u didn't stop.
U knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations-
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars begin to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice,
which u slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
dtermined to do
the only thing u cud do-
determined to save
the only life u cud save. :)

Well....there are a TON of interpretations. From what I got out of it, I think the speaker is fighting off his/her "ghosts" from their past. I get the picture of someone walking alone through a cemetary. They have to fight their own battles (mistakes from the past and perhaps memories, beliefs, etc from their younger days) and are now entering into a new chapter in their life.

I think poetry interpretation is a personal thing. Your teacher probably doesn't have a "right" answer in mind. To me, it is about a person finally deciding to ignore the needs of others and look out for number one. But I'm not very deep and have a history of missing the point when it comes to poetry.

Well according to significance, it means, as a theme: one is the only person that can be our own salvation or damnation.
According to style, there is a shift of attitude and ellipsisthrought the poem, it uses clichés too..
