What goes around comes around, if you try to find the owner you will be blessed in the future some how, maybe something you lose will be returned to you. Just like one of the others said, run the add, mention initials, but make them tell you what they are and have them give you a description of the ring.

Well, where did you find it? I had a friend who's gf threw his class ring into Lake Erie, 30 some years later, a person with a metal detector found it and called him. (His name was engraved in the ring). I also have a metal detector and to be honest, I'm not sure what I would do. If you really want to be an honest person, place an add in the paper, saying you found a ring and where you found it, and say the intials inside the ring is h something c. Let the caller tell you that it is a j. And make sure the caller tells you exactly what the ring looks like. One last thought...if it's a wedding ring, I would have to place an add in the paper, because I lost my diamond wedding ring and I was devasted.

The fact that you are seeking counsel is a good sign. Place an ad in the local paper where you found the ring, but let the alleged owners furnish the details so you know whether or not they are indeed the proper owners. There is a waiting period that varies from state to state, I am sure, but if no one has responded in the prescribed time, it is yours to do with as you wish...and then you can fully enjoy your windfall and not have it on your conscience.
Hope everything works out for you.....

I think the most honest thing to do is to make a newspaper ad saying that you found a diamond ring,, blah blah blah... and if no one claims it, you should either keep it if you really want to, or sell it for the money. I wouldnt just keep it/sell it w/o putting an ad in the paper cuz ur consinche(sorry spelled wrong) might get to you.

Well if you want to sleep at night, you can put an ad in "HJC I found what you lost, must describe" and wait for every freak to contact you.
Was it in the ground long (you can tell, you know what I mean)? My nephew found a man's diamond ring shoved down the seat of a 1969 caddy--we called the original owner (traced via the vin) and she was 102 years old, screaming at us "YOU KIDS STOP CALLING ME" so he kept it---sold it for 2 grand.

To keep it would be to act dishonestly. Turn it into local police, and tell them exactly how you found it. After a while, if it isn't claimed, you will keep it (a benefit in itself.)
Besides, the only reason you would want to keep it would be for the value of the EXPERIENCE of turning it in. 'HJC' are not your initials, and chances are that you will not date someone with those initials in this lifetime.

if you are short with money and have money problems you should sell it... if you feel you have enough then return it to the owner.. and if you like the ring and wants to give it to your gf or wife you can do that... no point of putting up the ad for the newspaper.. its waste of time...

Try to find the owner but if you put it in a newspaper ad just write found ring with initials on it and when they come tell them what initials are on it and if in one month no one claims it keep it and sell it...finders keepers lol
