The concept of the Ugly American came about because of crude, rude Americans who traveled abroad and disparaged everything and everyone they saw. This also applies within American borders when Americans who visit different regions of their own country are rude and crude, and disparage everything and everyone they meet.

ALWAYS be respectful and polite. You'll get more from your trip as the locals will reciprocate your respect and interact with you. Remember that you're on THEIR turf and you're also representing America which is not highly looked upon in many countries anymore. A good travel guide will brief you on other cultures before you travel. For example, in some cultures it is impolite to photograph locals without permission or to dress in ways that we consider appropriate. And how would you like foreigners to act toward you on a visit to the USA? Case closed.

I don't travel that much, but if you travel and experience diferent religions or places, you should always respect their customs, no matter what. You wouldn't like it if a foreigner came to your location and disrespected you. Just like the show Wild Boyz witht the 2 guys from jackass... they travel around the world... still acting stupid, but no matter where they go they always respect the people and places they visit.

Many foreigners commit the error of ignorance. Some just don't wanna bend their minds to other's ways. I guess meeting half-way should do the trick. And believe me, it's not just the Americans. It's every people who encounters a different custom.
