You will need a bachelor's degree in East Asian Studies (4 years), and then a combination M.A./Ph.D. in East Asian Studies, with a focus on Japanese history. You should start studying Japanese at the undergraduate level, preferably for all four years. If possible, you may want to take your Junior year abroad to study in Japan.

Your Ph.D. should take about 6 years in total (3 years of coursework, 1 year of comprehensive exams and language exams, 1 or 2 years of dissertation research, writing, and defense). You may want to add a year for study abroad in Japan during your Ph.D. research.

You need bachelor's degree in history--4 years

Masters--at least 2 more years

Doctorate--at least 2 more years

Then a lot of luck, although there will be less competition in Japanese history than in US history.

I teach US and Asian history in the community college. Best of luck in your efforts!

You need to become a teacher and specialise in Japanese history. College is four years and probably another two to specialise.
