I unfortunately live in St. Louis right now until I move back to Florida next month. Everything Trixie D said was 100% correct except they forgot to mention the horrible humidty. I am from Florida and I can't stand the humidity here.
They also forgot to mention the lack of good jobs unless you know someone. It doesn't matter that you are a veteran that served 6 months in the desert living in a tent they don't respect you.
They also didn't mention all the run down abandon buildings everywhere.
The scary metro link where they harass people about having a ticket, but never check to see if the homeless have a ticket to ride.
Just like Trixie D said about the pizza. When I move from here I won't forget their lousy pizza and their lousy St. Louis provel cheese.
Only people who have lived in St. Louis all of their lives and don't know better like St. Louis.

Racism at its fullest. I thought the South was bad, but I have seen more blatant and outspoken racism here than anywhere else I have lived / visited in this world. It beats California, Florida, and Texas combined! No joke, the people here love to make a snide remark about black people, and the saddest part is that they think they are so loving and helpful! The "Show Me State", yeah, show me your racist membership card.
Why do you think Diane Sawyer chose St. Louis, MO to do an expose on black profiling over the phone? Why did an Atlanta-based news staion have to travel all the way to St. Louis to do a story on 'racism while trying to get an apartment'? Don't you think they could do that story inside downtown Atlanta? Sure, but if you want to guarantee that you will get the story you want you go to where racism is the most prevailant - St. Louis, MO!!
Here's an example: Last Saturday, I stood in line behind a white couple (myself being white) and watched as they sampled all 12 flavors of ice cream, twice. The employee was very helpful towards them. They finally chose a flavor; I chose a flavor and we all sat down. Five minutes later a black man walks and askes if he can have a sample. The employee says reluctantly, "Uh, sure, whadda you want?" (not very nice at all.) The black man points the ice cream and the employee uses the little spoon to scoop it out and hand it to him. The employee turns and walks over to the other counter and stands there ignoring the black man. "Can I try all of the flavors?" the black man asks. "Uh, no, we only sample out 3 flavors." the employee answers. (Remember, the couple that sampled the entire lineup is still only five feet away! They look at the balck man and leave! Way to look out for your fellow man!)
The black man ended up buying THREE ice cream cones, eating them as he stood there. First, I couldn't hardly finish mine, and to see him eat three was amazing. But the employee saw him as nothing more than 'other-than-white' and threated him as such. While he was standing there eating his second cone, two white women and a kid came in. They managed to get more than the 3-sample limit (each!), and all of this two feet away from the black man.
It just doesn't pay to be black in St. Louis, MO. Being a black person that has grown up in STL you may not see it since you have no idea how one is supposed to be treated. You have experienced this sort of thing all your life and you know of nothing else. I'm sorry that STL treats you so badly, but I don't see these people recognizing anytime soon that it's 2006 and not 1950 anymore. I suggest checking this out yourself by visiting other cities and comparing how you were treated. Sit back and watch the difference instead of participating in it - you'll be able to see the difference much easier.
Oh, and don't forget that STL has the WORST, most flavorless pizza ever produced!! It is only one step above a saltine with ketchup on it, NO JOKE!! Those that say "St. Louis style pizza is the best" have never traveled outside their zip code. NY, San Fransico, Chicago... now THEY know something about good pizza!

And I think about the time I was hitch-hiking across the country back in 1975 when this guy picked me up and drove me through St. Louis just because he knew traffic was going to get bad and I'd never get a ride. Nice guy.

My mom, who died from breast cancer in 1972 when I was 22. And the Arch, Anhueiser Busch, St. Louis Cardinals (I grew up with them), The HIll (the best Italian food ever), and the old muddy MIssissippi, race riots in East St. Louis in the late sixties, early seventies.
Nice place to visit, but, I wouldn't want to live there.

Cardinals, Rams, Blues, Arch, Mississippi River, World's Fair, Lindburgh (Spirit of St Louis), The question, "Where'd ya go to high school?"
Racism is not something that I immediately think of, but it is certainly rampant in this city, particularly among StL natives of all races.

Hometown fun. Drinking beer, going to see the Rams, Cards, or Blues, going to Mardi Gras, concerts, the brewery. It's all here and it's all good. The Lou has some great clubs and concert venues, but nothing, I repeat nothing had togetherness like seeing everyone come out for the Arena going down. Young, old, man, woman, child, we were all there and all celebrating years of fun and good times.
