Ortiz no he's not. He was barely hitting his weight half of the year. Lots of HRs but he's in a hitter's paradise batting in the middle of a stocked lineup. If he cannot hit at least .300 under those conditions something is wrong. His .402 OBP is embarrasing for an MVP cantidate.

Guys I think had much better years.
Jeter with the Yankees. .346 BA, 100+ RBIs and Runs most likely. Closing on 30 SBs with only 3 CS. Plays great defense at SS.

Justin Morneau - with almost no support in the line up and far fewer guys to bring in Morneau has almost as many RBIs as Ortiz plus a .321 BA to go with it. Morneau is far more valuable to the Twins than Ortiz is to the Redsox.

Travis Hafner. Offensive stats compreable to Ortiz but without the kind of table Ortiz always has set and without any real protection. Both play in hitters parks. Hafner has slightly lower HR and RBI but better BA, OBP. Hafner is VERY much more important to the Indians than Ortiz is to the Redsox. Looks like niether team will make the playoffs so both are at a disadvantage there.

Offensively Manny Ramierez and Ortiz are about even in production. Manny doesn't have as many HRs or RBIs but he gets on base far more often and is a much more consistant hitter.

Paul Konerko - He has strong WS offense to help. With Thome and Dye having great years Konerko has protection. He also has stats the equal of Ortiz but Konerko is playing for a team more likely to make the playoffs. So I'd give Konerko the nod over Ortiz for more consistant play and being on a winner. Other than that they are pretty much equal.

Vernon Wells a great center fielder with offensive numbers almost equal to Ortiz. Not as many RBIs but Wells can steal bases and has much better BA than Ortiz. Wells plays a defensively demanding posisition and on a team without a strong offense.

Pudge just didn't put up the numbers this year or I'd easily vote for him for sheer leadership. A huge void in Ortiz's arsenal.

Michael Young is having an off year but it's still a hell of a good year for a good defensive shortstop. Texas's offense this year has been surprising flat and that has probably reduced Young's numbers a little. Still I'd vote for Young any day over Ortiz for MVP. Young makes the hard plays and offensively isn't that far behind Ortiz.

Victor Martinez is still in range. A good hot streak and he can finish some great numbers for a good defensive catcher.

So Ortiz wouldn't even make my top 10. Lots of HRs but relitively low RBIs for all those HRs, especially considering the kind of lineup and park he hits in. That he does not play defense hurts him and that the Redsox dropped out of contention due to injuries, none of which were his also says alot about who actually helps the Sox win. Varitek for example appears to be more important to winning Sox games than Ortiz. A little better offensive numbers out of Varitek and I'd added him to this list as well.

There is a myth that the team that the MVP is on must make the playoffs. This is not true. If a player is so far above the competition then he can be MVP (A-Rod won it several time on non-playoff teams). However, even though he is more worthy of the award than anyone else in the AL, there is no way he is going to get it. The AP loves Jeter and will once again use the "he cant field excuse" to rob him of another award. They dont seem to understand that the MVP award goes to the most valuable player i.e. the player that got their team the most wins which is undeniably Ortiz.

No, one hes a DH, two his team wont make the playoffs. MVP deserves to go to Derek Jeter. He has better offensive numbers then Miguel Tejada other then Home runs but when you drive in 90 runs who needs them? Also, he makes the big defensive plays at the right time. Dye should be a high candidate along with Morneau, but those teams didnt have any major injuries on offense and didnt have to carry their team for an extended time. Jeter has been the only constant in the yankees line up. Giambi and A-rod have been streaky all year long, and without Matsui, Sheffield, and Cano for a period of time, Jeter carried the team the whole way with his consistent play. And whoever said Jeter was the worst defending shortstop i guess gold gloves don't mean anything huh?

I yelled "MVP" for Papi after Sunday's home run at Fenway. I also yelled MVP at Manny in 2004. I don't think that the Baseball Writers are going to listen this year, as they did not listen last year or 2004. Half the writers are in NL cities and think that the DH is baseball heresy and is only for big hitting gloms who don't know what to do with a glove. While Papi as a first baseman made a fool of Suppan in Game 3 of the 2004 World Series, the argument is that he is not called upon to field first base on a daily basis. I hope that I am wrong, because the thought galls me almost as much as last year's decision to give the AL MVP to DP-Rod, but look for a certain Yankee shortstop whose name will remain unmentioned to be the MVP. Icck.

No one is more clutch but there is a stigma tha tthe MVP needs to be on a winning team. Defense means nothing and even being a Sox fan, I dont like hearing this but, its gonna end up being Jeter. Hes the only other guy near Ortiz's offensive numbers and even though he is the worst defending shortstop in the league, its about offense and winning. I would hope Johan Santana wins it. That guy is lights out almost every time and the Twins are making the playoffs.

DH's dont win MVP's but once every 15yrs and Bonds won that in 2001 so wait till 2016. Oh and A-Rod was the only player in the last 10yrs who one off a non-playoff team. So Ortiz wont win. GO JETER

I know you were somewhat giving respect to Jeter (as much as a sox fan can) but you were stretching it a little with worst defensive shortstop in the league. Jeter is the MVP for a million reasons. Don't point out home runs. Home runs don't win games. If they did Bonds would have a million rings. the Cards would have won in '98. You play any game to win. That is why making the playoffs count. Winners are valuable. Players who self promote on teams that are ten games out, after being swept in a 5 gamer by the next closest candidate aren't. Maybe last year, not this one! MVPs don't say their team is out of it until they are mathematically eliminated.

Ortiz is not the MVP - even with Ortiz, the Red Sox suck and they are going to miss the playoffs - the answer is Derek Jeter - without him, the Yanks would be missing the glue that keeps them together

Yes, I think David Ortiz is worthy because he carried Boston on his shoulders for a good portion of the '07' campaign. And, if my memory serve me correct, he's got 47 blasts, correct? Those are 'career year numbers' for most ML-Al players.

Well, he's got the numbers and, he's an awesome person, too. Definitely, "Big Poppy" is always worthy of MVP cosideration. He didn't plan on getting sick, so, he can't be blamed for following doctors orders. After all, he's got a family and hopefully many years of ball ahead of him.

Respectfully,

He's a great hitter, but I personally think you have to be a 2 way player to be MVP. Gotta play the field.
