They represent the common people who acquiesce believing the shadows they perceive are real. The philosopher is the one who escapes and understands what is the Good, as represented by the sun. This allegory is still appropriate for today, but this today it is the television that produces the shadows and the people believe it to be real.

Allegory of the cave Chapter XXV

The people in the cave are man seeing reflections from flames behind them. They see objects passing and casting shadows but cannot move to see them directly so they form their own impressions.

They live in the cave because they only know what they see, its only when they get out of the cave that they can see if their viewpoints are correct.

that's right. the previous two posters hit the nail on the head.

It's not that they CHOOSE to live in a cave.. rather they are IMPRISONED in a cave of ignorance. Almost all of us are, according to Plato's allegory.
