The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for his trophy has become one of the world's most prestigious sporting competitions.

Early years
The first Stanley Cup playoff game occurred in March 17, 1894, and the first game where the Cup was on the line occurred on March 22 the same year. The year saw four teams out of the five-team AHA tied for the championship with records of 5-3-0. This created problems for the AHA governors and the league trustees as to which team was champion, as there were no tiebreaking system in place. After long negotiation and the withdrawal of Quebec from the championship situation, it was decided that a three-team tournament would take place in Montreal, with the Ottawa team getting a bye to the finals (being the sole "road" team). The first Stanley Cup Final game saw the Montreal AAA successfully defending their title with a 3-1 win.

well it is common hockey fan knowledge that Montreal Amateur Atheletic Association of AHA won the Stanley Cup in 1893 ... however ... very little people know that the cup was played for before this happened.
The cup was passed to several teams pretty much like the pre league days where any worthy team could challenge for it. But, when teams and leagues started growing...the idea to award it and engrave their names did not come until early 1893...Lord Stanley made several stipulations with the trophy as well, many of which are not followed by today's trustees
The cup's original name...which still is on the bowl ...

I think some of the people giving answers forget that Lord Stanley DIDN'T have the cup given to Pro teams when it started. That was later. He turned it over to a committiee that was to award it.

The first American team to win the Cup was the Seattle Metropolitans (1916 - 1917)..! Having grew up and played hockey near Seattle, I had no idea until I saw their name on the Cup in 2002.
