I was in the RAF then and on the princely wage of about £3.00 per week. This equated to 48 pints of beer as, in the local pub I then drank in, the Black Swan in Wilmslow,Cheshire, a pint of bitter was 1shilling and 3 pence (1/3) i.e. 16 to the pound. Best bitter at 1/4 was luxury as you only got 15 to the pound. Effectively you could go out with ten bob (modern 50p), have 5 pints = 6/3, then go for fish and chips before wandering back to camp with change in your pocket!!! Your £5.00 would have been a fortune to National Servicemen = 80 pints per week. Sorry that's how I valued my wage in those days!!

In 1969, I could buy a pint for 1/8d. The same pint costs £2.40 today.

Say I earned £5 a week in 1969. I could buy 5 x 12 pints = 60.

Today, I would have to earn £144 a week (just leaving school) to drink myself silly.

How does 1969 compare to 1960? I will try and look this up. How much was a pint in 1960?

Probably about 1/1 d. = 18 pints for a £.

So in beer terms, £5 in 1960 in an average pub would be worth £216 today.

5 pounds was worth 5 pounds in 1960.
A pound of feathers is a pound of feathers.

Considering inflation, and what it would be worth today, I don't know.
