I want to apply to a Borders Bookstore in my area and am applying online for a part time position. I am a high school student and I have had consistent babysitting jobs for many families for about 3 years and have reliable references. However, does this count as a job to put under previous jobs? Or should I just say that I haven't had any other jobs?

I also don't want to get anyone in trouble by saying that it was a job if it wasn't "in the books".

Yes, for someone in your situation, it sure does count as a real job. Make sure you explain - don't just put down "babysitting". Say you were in charge of ___ children, ages __ to __; you were responsible for involving them in activities, taking them on outings, planning/preparing meals, organizing ____ ---- got the idea? There are a lot of responsibilities that come with babysitting that sound really good once you explain them. From that you have learned many skills, and have had to be creative, have good communication skills, etc. Hope that helps - I answered way more than the "yes" answer! Oh, and since it's a bookstore you are applying for, play up the reading you did to and with the kids, and if you visited the library for books and its programmes, and bookstores with them.

I would put it down defo. What employers look for always is experience, and a place like Borders means you have to deal with people. Your babysitting experience has meant you've been able to deal with both young(the kids) and older(their parents) generations more than adequately making you a prime candidate to work with people. Also include any work experience that you may have done/be doing with school or college. In the personal statement part, let the employer know about some of the responsibilities that you had with babysitting, espescially ones that may tie in with the new job.

Sure. You've shown that you're a responsible, reliable person by babysitting jobs, especially consistent ones. Those are qualities employers are looking for. Until you have a couple other jobs to list on an application, definitely list the babysitting.

Good luck.

It is better to list the babysitting jobs. It shows you have been doing something. You can also list volunteer jobs. You will make a better impression than the ones that have been sitting home watching TV.

SummerSun,

Certainly. You should note your babysitting experience. It shows that you have responsibly worked for others. Good luck at Borders.

I'm sure they would love to know that you have worked before and use those people as a reference (you'd have to ask them first before you put their name on any application though).

As you get older and pay taxes you can eliminate that job from your repetoire.
