Actually, our minds alter or change on their own before we begin seeking anything. It is in all of us and is essential for survival. If ego is of what we are so certain, then anti-ego is for what we question and the functional source for questioning.

To "pursue an altered state of mind" is an attempt to escape your reality. Therefore, I presume that people who miss something in their lives are more likely to engage in this mistreatment of their bodies. For the record, it has been proven over and over again that pursuing an "altered state of mind" is neither healthy nor spiritual. Some common street sense should awaken those in doubt, specially if they look into the lives of New York drug users who have lost their homes, families, friends and jobs.

It is the "inborn drive in some of us" that has led humans to investigate further into possibility of something that could belong to the past, the past which the mind tends to negate, refuse, just because it is not within the range of perception of sense organs and present memory. It is the ones with open mind, perseverance who could go deeper, and in the process, increase their levels of perception beyond sense organs, thereby also fulfilling the very purpose of human birth.
This inborn drive, if strong enough, even subdues the mind to pursue its own direction, plan and fulfillment of goals !

We all have different natures, complete with peculiar desires and preferences that make us, personally, more comfortable. What we need to realize is that our rights, our JUDGEMENTS, our responsabilities, and our power extends only to the extent that our persoal environments, and closer relationships do not violate our comfort consistently. We are NOT some other person. We do not decide other's environments, tastes, what they will be comfortable with or without. Now, we have complete liberty, espescially in this country to decide -- TO JUDGE -- every detail of our own lives, (tho being EFFECTIVE at this does take some personal practice, and learning the methods ),but, again, unless you're LOOKING for an emotional MESS, remember that we are not at liberty with other person's person. Now I seee that I didn't review the entire question B4 answering -- but I type so slow that I don't want to erase the work put into it... so here's the dumb answer of the hour.
