Usually in a city there is a public mental health hospital of some kind and if someone makes threats to harm themselves, they are sent there for observation. I don't know that this is the preferred treatment by clinicians. If the person isn't an immediate threat to themselves, I think most clinicians would prefer group therapy and cognitive behavioral modification.
