The silent treatment can be a form of control and abuse. Don't accept it, unless he just needs a cooling off period before he is willing to sit down and talk.

Give him time, he will talk to you when he is ready. Make him know you care by being by his side in a sweet quiet way.

try to cheer him up by talking about something else. don't mention about his mom's health.
