I am a New Yorker and I was here when the twin towers came down - though I was nowhere near ground zero. I was in Fresh MEadows over 20 miles away.

My question is, how could anyone, who knew anything about asbestos possibly believe the dust from the trade center was safe?

Even if I give it to them that they didn't have a background in science like myself, how could anyone believe that a mixture of jet fuel, burned bodies, dust from bricks, metals ,etc could possibly be safe?

I knew the government was lying when they said it wasn't a danger and so did many journalists who were slammed for writing reports to the contrary of the EPA's LIES.

I want to see the people in the EPA who published the LIES - endagering NYorkers, EXECUTED.

It wasn't the government that endangered New Yorkers, it was those who brought down the twin towers!

Do you suppose that anyone would have been safer had proclamations been issued that breathing toxic dust is bad for you? And did the government (I'm assuming you mean the EPA) say that no danger existed, or that no danger had yet been specifically identified?

What would you have had them do with the people who lived in areas where they might be exposed to such dust? Send them to Houston? At whose expense, and HOW?

Since you are a New Yorker, I'm certain that you know more about the day-to-day EPA publications on the subject than do I. But I do wonder what any government agency could have done to protect citizens against the possibility of unknown respiratory problems from an unanticipated source of contamination.

While I don't disbelieve you, as I am 3,000 miles away from Manhattan, and you would have heard such public statements while I might not have, it's hard for me to imagine them stating unequivocally that the debris presented no risk. If any official DID say that publicly, I agree that they should be held accountable. (Execution might be just a teeny bit too severe.)

But no matter who said what, my heart is with all of you today, and on many other days when I think about what happened to your wonderful city.

i agree that the place was not safe. the dust was highly toxic. the mixture of what was in that stuff can even accelerate cancer. the firefighters who rushed in did not really care though. i know the mindset, even as just a firefighter in training. its just what we do. as for the rest of the people the EPAs measurements were inaccurate. some of the reports they released were to calm people(and they did not see it as it was, from the outside it did not look as bad as it turned out). in this tragic case, it was probably safer to tell people that it was safe so as to not have mass panic over what was already there. they should have done a better job. its the same principal as telling people to stay in the 2nd tower before it was hit by the plane. people were trying to get out but were urged back in because it would have been more dangerous to get under the falling bodies and other falling debris. they didn't suspect that another plane was going to hit the tower as they did not suspect that the dust was as severely toxic as it turned out. the chemicals in it are not nearly as dangerous alone as when combined. it posed little threat alone, but the combination of all of the chems acting the way it was was unforeseen.

Asbestos is/was dangerous to people who worked in a cloud of it all day as in the only factory job I ever did (for 4 months). A couple of hours/days/weeks exposure is not going to do more than 1 in a million people any harm, there's no point in stirring up unnecessary hysteria in people who will be more greatly harmed by the stress and worry caused for no reason.

That's a bunch of crap if it's really true about the government lying. The only thing I can think of is that they didn't want to make the situation any worse. But that doesN'T make it any better!!!!!

I agree with the execution part, as to the rest it just exposes the extreme gullibility and idiocy of the American public.... but hey, we let that village idiot into office... go figure.

Um...

Hasn't there been enough hate and death already? Why can't we just try our best to help those in need from 9/11 and do our best to lawfully punish those that caused more hurt?
