The Tacoma Sabercats of the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) were in Tacoma from 1997 through 2002.

They won the WCHL Taylor Cup championship in 1999... but they never could drum up enough attendance to make it profitable enough to keep the team going. :o(

A lot of fans in that area think that the fact that they played in the old Tacoma Dome, which they thought was too large for that league (and often pretty empty) was one of the problems they had.

A couple years after the Sabercats folded, the remaining 6 teams in the WCHL (San Diego, Bakersfield, Anchorage, Boise, Fresno & Long Beach) merged with the ECHL and (exept for San Diego who folded this season) they are all still doing well.

The Tacoma Sabercats were a great team and hopefully someday Tacoma will have a new arena and a new team!
