The important thing to remember in simplifying equations of this type is that whatever you do to one side you must do to the other. I'll give you an example and then you should be able to answer the question yourself.
Let's take the equation 3x + 5 = 14.
3x + 5 = 14 first of all, let's get it just in terms of x, so we'll subtract 5 from each side leaving...
3x + (5 - 5) = 14 - 5 or
3x = 9 now we'll divide each side by 3 to leave x on the left
3x/3 = 9/3 or
x = 3
