It is the social/wealth "gap" presented in the story that influences him.

Unfortunately I think our culture is promoting, more and more, an individualistic ideal. What clothes make me special, what possessions sent me apart, etc, etc.

I think to a certain degree this is degrading a sense of community and family that is essential for a healthy society.
