I don't want to pass out the cash for a Gibson (and I can't make that kind of money in the time I need a guitar) and I wanted a Les Paul. I just want to know if Epiphone Les Pauls are really that horrible (and if you have a link to a sample of the sound one produces that would be awesome, since I can't find one anywhere else).

No, they're not bad guitars, they just aren't built to the exacting standards the Gibson-branded guitars are - the fit & finish aren't necessarily going to be as carefully quality-controlled, they aren't made of as expensive wood, the pickups and pots aren't as high of quality - but they're usually about 90% of the Gibson quality anyway, and in most cases the difference is offset by the savings - more pros than you might imagine use Epiphones for daily gigging because if the Epi falls off the back of the van, they haven't lost an irreplaceably valuable instrument.
(and you can change the pickups & pots anyway, if you like)

No, they're fine. With guitars, you don't always get what you pay for, so $2000 guitars are not always better than $500 ones. I suggest trying a few Epis and then just pick the one that feels and sounds the best to you. Keep in mind, you can always swap out the pickups for relatively little cash, and that can greatly improve the sound if you are dissatisfied with it.
