Radiator flush and fill, new tires or at least make sure the best tires are on the front for a front wheel drive, or rear for a rear wheel drive. New wiper blades, check belts and hoses for dry rot, things of that nature.

a tune up is the best not the 89.00 one but get the 129.00 kinda steep but well worth it. then go to sears and do a complete fluid flush and WATCH those lazy sob's. Doing that drains all corrosion built up. goodyear has some mach III treadlife tires all season for like 80.00 each. and check your radiator and o2 sensor

Make sure you have a jack in case you get flat. Buy a bunch of handwarmer packets made for hunters. Make sure you have at least one blanket. Jumper cables. some snacks and something to gather snow to melt to drink. shovel in the trunk. And do everything mentioned by other responders!
