Each person brought cookies a dozen cookies for 8 people, so that is 96 cookies bought by each person times the total number of people, which is nine, so that gives you 864 cookies.

Each person brought their cookies. Now it's up to the others to decide how many they want to buy. So it could be anything from 0 to 864. BTW the NYSE is an "exchange", but stocks do have to be "bought".
