My friend found this small fountain that keeps the water circulating. It looks like a mushroom and is battery operated. I wish I knew where she got it. Try a lawn and garden area of Lowes or Home Depot. She is always there!

Yes to what Norman said but also, back in the old days I remember my grandmother saying it was very important for many reasons to rinse the birdbath every day or every other day if it is not raining.

I know of NOTHING that you can use... I have had the same problem and what I did was.. from time to time.. get the water out... wash it with clorox... splash it with water again t get the clorox out and then refill... the clorox, of course, kills the algae. I will not even attempt to add anything to the water for fear it might have an affect on the birds.

it is possible that you could add just a drop of bleach. it shouldn't be enough to get the dog sick, but if it was me... i wouldn't worry about it.

you might try a pool supply place for some algea killers. these would have to be safe for humans with people swallowing the pool water,

other than that, I don't know

a little bit of bleach will not harm the animals that drink. Chlorine is added to the drinking water of city water plants for human consumption. I have animals drink from my swimming pool and and it hasn't hurt them.

Funny, our cat uses ours as her water bowl. Instead of trying to add something to the water why don't you just change it everyday when you water your plants?
