Characters in a story undergo a journey, either an outward journey through space and/or time, or an inner journey of self-discovery. Often the journey contains both. In fact a story is the retelling of what happens on the journey.

Check out Joseph Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces. He wrote extensively on the subject.
