Can you tell the sex of Box Turtles?

We're getting a box turtle for our girls, 2 1/2 & 5 1/2 and they're already asking if it's a "boy" or "girl"!?

First, what breed are they. The most common are Eastern Box Turtles (so that's probably what you are getting). Males are usually bright colored, like with a lot of orange and yellow.. while females tend to be just brown-ish colored. Also the anal opening on the tail is closer to the shell on females. A females shell on the bottom will be more flat, where a males has an indentation.

Eastern box turtles and their relatives (Eastern or Carolinian, Three-toe, etc.) you can sometimes go by eye color- bright eyes (red, orange) are male, brown eyes are female.

While it does not work on babies, bigger turtles can be sexed by the tails and belly. Males have long, thin tails and in-curved bellies. Females have short wide tails and flat or outcurved bellies.

look under the turtle . If it is concave {sucks in like a bowl } it is male . If its flat underneath its a girl..
It is like this for breeding purposes so the male can stay on.
