how do you roll logs over head height like roof ridge without a crane pioneers did it

It is an old technique called the "Incline Plane". It's just a ramp. You pull the logs up the ramp using a rope.

Go to the library and check out PBS' Frontier House Video series. There was a father and son who built a log cabin from scratch. I don't have a clue which episode, but had to be somewhere near the beginning because they lived in it the rest of the show. Good watch :)

plus back in the day the neighbors helped them build it , they had the right idea looking out for each other,,,
